Dance South West / Pavilion Dance appoints Artistic Director

27 January 2012

The board of Dance South West / Pavilion Dance has appointed Deryck Newland as Artistic Director. Deryck has been Director of Salisbury Arts Centre since 2007 and will be starting his prestigious new role in early May.

Deryck will lead the artistic vision of Pavilion Dance, Bournemouth's national dance house and a beacon for inspirational dance, and of Dance South West, the Arts Council England-funded national dance development agency, which connects venues, artists and audiences throughout the South West.

Stephen Godsall, Chair of Dance South West / Pavilion Dance Board said: "We are very excited about the future of Dance South West and Pavilion Dance with Deryck as Artistic Director. He brings tremendous experience and a clear vision of how the organisation can move forward in the vanguard of UK dance."

Deryck has come a long way since he set up a small Theatre in Education company as a graduate, touring schools across the country in an Austin Maxi with the set precariously balanced on the roof; he has led Drama departments in inner city Bristol schools, directed opening and closing ceremonies for the European Youth Olympics, set up The Arc Theatre in Trowbridge, developed a new theatre development agency for Wiltshire, TheatreWorks, (now Creative Ecology Wiltshire).

Since 2007 Deryck has been the Director of Salisbury Arts Centre, a progressive multi-art form venue in a beautiful Grade 2-listed church building. Among other things he developed a young people’s contemporary dance participation programme, introduced a strong professional dance programme and co-commissioned dance works including Fleur Darkin’s Innocence and Experience and Stan Won’t Dance’s acclaimed production of Babel.

Deryck Newland said: "I am thrilled to be joining Dance South West/Pavilion Dance and the great staff and board team already there and tremendously excited by the potential of the organisation as it joins Arts Council England's brand new National Portfolio of Arts organisations from April. I look forward to working with dance companies, artists, practitioners and agencies across the south west and nationally and to sharing wonderful dance experiences with the people of Bournemouth and the broader locality."
